Scope and Contents

This collection consists of 74 projects, the majority of which were created by firms in which Cole was a partner. Projects consist of architectural drawings, photographs, and other reference materials related to office buildings, churches, schools, and a variety of public structures and green spaces. Included is a collection of negatives and slides of Cole’s time at Ball State University’s College of Architecture and Planning, as well as Cole’s 1986 senior thesis.

Biographical Note

David Brent Cole, the son of Carolyn Meyer Cole and Kenneth D. Cole, was born on July 4, 1954 in Fort Wayne. He graduated from South Side High School in Fort Wayne, and in 1978, married Andrea (Sullivan) Cole. After graduating from Ball State University’s College of Architecture and Planning, Cole practiced architecture with his father in their joint practice, Cole and Cole Architects. He also worked for several other firms: Cole, Matson, and Matott; Cole, Matott, and Riley; Cole and Matott; Cole, Matott; Cole Matott Architects; and Sauer, Cole, Matson, Matott Architects and Engineers. Throughout his architectural career, he placed a heavy emphasis on community enrichment and environmental sensitivity, and he possessed a passion for the renovation of historic structures. Later in his life, he taught courses in architectural drafting and design at Ivy Tech Community College. He died on June 3, 2015, at 60 years old.
