Historical Note

The Ball State Daily news began as The Easterner during the Spring Quarter of 1922 (March 27, 1922 to June 16, 1922) under the direction of the Indiana State Normal School Eastern Division. The first issue hit the newstands on March 30th, and it was touted as "A Live Paper From a Live School."

On February 26, 1937 The Easterner gave way to the Ball State News, because "the former title lost its significance years ago." Editors of the newspaper felt that The Easterner was a "misnomer," as the Normal School assumed the name of Ball State Teachers College in 1922.

On Tuesday, September 12, 1968, the Ball State News became the Ball State University Daily News, which reflected a change in the school as well as its student newspaper. As Ball State Teachers College became Ball State University in February 1965, the newspaper name change reflected the institutional transformation. Furthermore, as the newspaper took on the responsibility of daily deadlines, it eschewed the former title of Ball State News and became the Ball State University Daily News.

On July 1, 1971, the The Ball State News shortened its title to simply, Daily News, and alternated between that title and The Ball State Daily News for a number of years, finally settling on the latter.
