Biographical Note / Historical Note / Administrative History

Alexander M. Bracken was born on May 7, 1908 in Toronto, Ontario and later moved to Muncie, Indiana, where he graduated from Muncie Central High School. Bracken later earned a B.A. and a J.D. from the University of Michigan. In 1932, he married Rosemary W. Ball, daughter of Frank C. Ball, co-founder of the Ball Brothers Glass Manufacturing Company. In 1933, Bracken was hired as an attorney for the Ball Brothers Company, beginning a 45-year career with the company which culminated in his serving as the chairman of the board of the Ball Corporation from 1970 to 1978.

Bracken was appointed in 1954 to the State Teachers College Board (which would be renamed the Ball State University Board of Trustees in 1965), and was elected president of the board in 1958. Bracken would serve in this capacity until 1980. The period of Bracken’s presidency was one of significant growth for Ball State, with enrollment more than tripling during this era. In 1976, the new university library was named the Alexander M. Bracken Library in his honor. On April 22, 1991, Bracken passed away at the age of 82.
