Biographical Note
Richard W. Burkhardt received his undergraduate degree from Knox College in 1939. He went on to receive an A.M. in 1940, an A.M.T. in 1942, and an Ed.D. in 1945 from Harvard University.
Prior to coming to Ball State in 1952, Burkhardt served seven years as a professor of Education and Social Sciences at Syracuse University's Maxwell Graduate School of Citizenship and Public Affairs.
He came to Ball State to serve as Dean of the Teachers College and as a Professor of History. When Ball State Teacher College was renamed Ball State University in 1965, Burkhardt became the Vice President for Instructional Affairs and the Dean of Faculties. He went on to serve as Acting President of Ball State University from September 1, 1978 to June 30, 1979. After President Jerry Anderson was selected, Burkhardt was named Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs from September 1979 to February 1980.
He was instrumental in the establishment of the Althea Stoeckel Delaware County Archives, now called the Stoeckel Archives of Local history, as well as the London Centre Program, which is a semester-long, multi-disciplinary study abroad opportunity for Ball State University students.
