Rosa Veal papers
Scope and Contents
This collection includes teaching and personal materials from Ms. Rosa Veal's time serving as an elementary school teacher at the Burris School and education professor with Ball State Teachers College from 1936-1948. This includes a detailed diary of class activities and student observations providing a fascinating look into the life of a Burris elementary class room during this time period. A number of her students would go on to become prominent members of the Muncie community. Among these are Frank Bracken, who served on the boards of the Ball Corportaion and Ball State, and Wiley Spurgeon, who went on to become the executive editor for the Muncie Star and Evening Press in 1979. Several examples of Mr. Spurgeon's early efforts at publication were saved by Ms. Veal and include two fictional newspapers and several samples of creative writing. Also included in the collection are documents from her community involvement with the Delta Kappa Gamma teachers sorority and the Muncie branch of the Association for Childhood Education (A.C.E.).

Biographical Note / Historical Note / Administrative History
Rosa Veal served as an elementary school teacher and served as an associate professor of elementary education with Ball State Teachers College from 1936-1948. During this time she also served as president of the Muncie branch of the Association for Childhood Education and served with the teaching sorority of Delta Kappa Gamma. Before teaching in Muncie she had receied her A.B. degree from Winthrop College and her masters degree from George Peabody College for Teachers. Following her time at Ball State she accepted a teaching position in Campobello, South Carolina where she had many family members. Ms. Veal passed away in 1967 at the age of 63.
