Biographical / Historical

Ball State University has been offering courses in psychology since its establishment in 1918. After the creation of the Teachers College, the courses were offered through the Department of Education and later the Department of Psychology. The university officially added psychology as an undergraduate major in 1966. The program eventually split into three departments within the Teachers College: General and Experimental Psychology, Educational Psychology, and Counseling Psychology and Guidance Services. In 1972, the Department of General and Experimental Psychology moved to the College of Science and Humanities, while Educational Psychology and Counseling Psychology and Guidance Services remained in the Teachers College. The Department of General and Experimental Psychology was later renamed the Department of Psychological Science in 1980. The first chair of the Department of Psychological Science was Robert Hill (1972 to 1979), followed by Frank Meeker (1979 to 1982), Gary Meunier (1982 to 1983), David Hines (1983 to 2000), David Perkins (2000 to 2003), Michael Stevenson (2003 to 2005), Bernard Whitley (2005 to 2014), and Guy Mittleman (2014 to 2020).
