Scope and Contents

This collection includes research materials and manuscript drafts from Charles F. Van Cleve ranging from 1896 to 1968 regarding the history of Ball State Teachers College. His research materials contain information regarding students, faculty, and administration of the college as well as publications created by Ball State and its predecessors. His manuscript draft documents the history of Ball State Teachers College and contains edited versions of his final copy.

Historical Note

Charles F. Van Cleve was born August 5, 1895 in Troy, Ohio. He graduated from Central High School in Toledo, Ohio in 1913. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1917 and his Master's degree from the University of Chicago in 1922. In 1937 he earned his Ph.D. from George Peabody College for Teachers. Charles F. VanCleve was married to Betty Warren Van Cleve in Kalamazoo, Michigan on June 22, 1925.

Van Cleve was a teacher of English at the Milwaukee Boys' Technical School from 1922 to 1924. He was the First Dean of Lyons Junior College in Harvey, Illinois from 1927 to 1929. At Ball State, he served as a Professor of English, Director of Convocations and University Historian. He was the author of the manuscript "A History of Ball State University." He was also the author of How to Write a Research Report in 1950. Van Cleve was a commissioned Ensign serving 19 months on the Atlantic Coast and overseas, starting November 13, 1918. He was discharged June, 19 1924. He passed away at age 84 in Arlington, Texas.
