Biographical / Historical
The Students' Army Training Corps was established in 1918 by the U.S. War Department's Committee on Education and Special Training in an attempt to aid in the World War I efforts. The purpose of this program was to utilize the personnel and facilities of educational institutions for military training. The government had contracts to establish such programs with 525 different schools across the United States. Enrollment in the S.A.T.C. was completely voluntary, and those who were inducted earned the status of private in the U.S. Army. In the Fall of 1918, 124 men enlisted in the S.A.T.C. at the newly established Indiana State Normal School, Eastern Division, in Muncie, IN. Just months later on November 11, 1918, the Armistice ending WWI was signed, and the S.A.T.C. program was slowly disbanded. Many S.A.T.C. programs were eventually replaced with Reserve Officers' Training Corps (R.O.T.C.) programs.
