Biographical / Historical
The institution currently known as Ball State University was originally founded in 1899 as the Eastern Indiana Normal University under the guidance of F. A. Z. Kumler and the Eastern Indiana Normal University Association. The first building on the campus, now known as the Administration Building, was built on a budget of $33,000 and dedicated on August 28, 1899. On September 24, 1901, President F. A. Z. Kumler made the decision to close the school due to a lack of funding. The school opened a year later as Palmer University with funding from retired Indiana banker Francis Palmer.
