Content Description
This collection contains materials created and used by Anne Pieroni Szopa from 1958 to 2006. It includes Szopa's coursework from her undergraduate and graduate coursework from the College of Mount St. Joseph and Ball State University, respectively. It also contains publications, research materials, and coursework from her time as a professor of gender studies at Ball State University. Finally, it includes some personal papers, including correspondence and photographs.

Biographical / Historical
Anne Pieroni Szopa was born on June 8, 1943 in Muncie, Indiana to Judge Mario and Jane Pieroni. She attended Burris Laboratory School, a division of Ball State University, and earned a BA in English in 1965 from College of Mount St. Joseph in Ohio. Szopa also attended Ball State University, where she earned an MA in Sociology in 1976 and PhD in Social Science in 1986.
While working toward her doctorate degree, Szopa was an Instructor of Sociology at Ball State, where she assisted in founding the Women and Gender Studies Program. After 1989, she became a professor at Indiana University East in Richmond, where she became a tenured professor of Sociology, and for a time also served as the Chair of the Division of Behavioral and Social Science and the Co-Coordinator of the Women and Gender Studies Program (which was another program she helped found). She passed away on November 28th, 2013 at the age of 70.
Both Ball State and IU East have scholarships in Szopa’s honor available to students studying women’s and gender’s studies.
