Biographical / Historical
“Breakthrough 40 Plus” is a bi-monthly newsletter created by a rotating group of individuals to discuss the use of solar energy above the fortieth parallel. Because this area is unideal for solar use, this newsletter was created to support locals still hoping to implement solar energy. The newsletter explores local inventions, discoveries, and thoughts on using solar as well as other renewable energy sources. Started and edited by Alan Garinger, a Ball State alum and an inhibitor of various positions in the Muncie Community Schools, the newsletter had a rotating volunteer staff totaling nearly 60 people. The newsletter went on to have nearly 1000 subscribers across 40 states as well as 3 countries outside the US, was highlighted in an article by the Muncie Star Press, and received a PRIDE award by Lt. Gov. Robert Orr for notable environmental work in Indiana.
