Administrative History
The first Episcopal service conducted in Muncie was held in the Presbyterian Church in June 1839 and presided over by Rev. George Fiske of Richmond. Records indicate that the next service was held in 1859, again at the Presbyterian Church located at the northeast corner of Walnut and Charles Streets.
Between 1859 and 1875, services were held intermittently at the Presbyterian Church, opera house, and the city building. In 1875 an organizational meeting was held which resulted in the establishment of the Grace Mission, with Rev. Jesse Bicknell as the first rector. In 1878, Grace Episcopal Church was established. The parish was located at 209 N. Walnut Street, and a frame building was constructed at that site at a cost of $650.
In April 1881, the parish moved to a lot at the corners of Adams and Mulberry. The church later relocated to a site at the corner of Madison and Adams Streets. In 1923, the church moved to the northwest corner of the same lot, where it remains today.
