Historical Note

The Muncie Matinee Musicale club was founded on January 12, 1889. It was organized by the supervisor of music for the Muncie city schools, Miss Nannie C. Love, who served as the club's president for the first nineteen years. The club was composed of senior, student, and junior departments, each having its own officers and each later being affiliated with the National Federation of Music Clubs.

The first student program was presented in 1896. Programs continued to be given each year until 1918 when the Junior Matinee Musicale was formed. It was the largest junior group in the state. Set up for children in grades three through eight, the Junior Musicale was designed to enrich students' musical experience. In 1932, the Student Musicale was organized under the supervision of Mrs. Eva Props for musicians of high school and college age.

In 1921, the Matinee Musicale became a member of the Indiana Federation of Music Clubs. Early programs of the club brought several performances to Muncie, including the Boston Symphony Club, the Carrie Jacobs Band, and Clara Clemens, daughter of Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain). The club continued to bring notable, musically-talented artists to Muncie.
