Biographical Note
The early history of the Maddy family could not be verified. They may be descended from Revolutionary war financier, Robert Morris, whose sister Ann married soldier John Maddy and had one son, John. Other information traces the Maddy family to James and Anna Kissenger, parents of Henry Maddy. Henry Maddy married Elizabeth Swope in Virginia and had seven children, including James Maddy. James Maddy was one of the earlier settlers of Muncie. His name appears in the Delaware County deed records numerous times between 1837 and 1850. The 1860 census lists James Maddy, his wife Rebecca, and eight children, William, Goldsberry, John B., Elias A., Lydia, Charles, Clara, and Ann E. as residents of Muncie. James and his son William are both listed as being grocers.
