Administrative History

Indiana's nine Area Library Services Authorities (ALSAs) are regional networks with members of all types and sizes of libraries: academic, public, school and special. Because each ALSA works locally with its member libraries, it is possible to respond to the needs of the community and provide services vital to member libraries. This in turn provides better library service to the citizens of Indiana. Individual libraries participate in the resource sharing activites of their ALSAs on a voluntary basis and retain local autonomy. ALSAs are established under the provision of the Library Services Authority Act of 1967.

The ALSAs provide several basic services including interlibrary loan, reference referral, library staff development, consultation, audio-visual equipment borrowing, delivery service, cooperative purchasing, and a state wide reading program.
