Administrative History
William Bullock organized the first Torch Club on July 10, 1924, in Minneapolis, MN. The purpose of the club was to provide an opportunity for professional persons to develop an understanding of each other’s professions, promote free exchange of ideas, fosters the highest standards of professional ethics and civic well-being, and fellowship. The organization differs from others in that they champion no particular cause.
The Muncie chapter of the Torch Club was chartered on March 29, 1950, with 46 charter members. Among the club’s first members were several men who held administrative positions at Ball State, including former president Lemuel Pittenger and registrar Leo Hauptman. The monthly dinner program consists of presentations by club members, after which is a general discussion. In 1979, the Muncie Torch Club received the first “Most Improved Club” award at the 1979 international convention in Norfolk, Virginia.
