This collection includes correspondence, newspaper clippings, reports, maps, photographs, and other materials from Dorothea Bump in Muncie, Indiana ranging from 1919 to 1993 regarding local elections, political and civic issues in Delaware County and the city of Muncie, and the administration of Beech Grove Cemetery.

Biographical Note

Dorothea Bump was born on November 22, 1918 in Muncie, Indiana to parents Gladys Melinda (Simpson) Conn and Leo Bernard Conn. Though she spent her childhood moving around the country with her parents, she returned to Muncie in 1940.

Bump worked as a reporter for the Muncie Evening Press, and received numerious state and national awards for her writing.

In addition to her career as a newspaperwoman, Bump was heavily involved as a board member in many local and health organizations, including the Muncie Civic Theatre, the Delaware County Mental Health Association, the Richmond State Hospital Advisory Council, the Indiana Department of Mental Health Advisory Commission, the Widowed Persons Service Coordinating Board, and the Beech Grove Cemetery Board. She also served at the first public relations director for the Community Fund of Delaware County, now known as the United Way, and co-founded and served as the first coordinator of the Crisis Intervention Center.

Bump also held memberships in several women's organizations, including the Jones-Riley Club, the Women's Press Club of Indiana, East Central Indiana Women in Communications, National Federation of Press Women, and Women in Communications, Inc.

When her husband, Richard E. Bump, died in 1984, Bump completed his term as Muncie City Councilman, and was elected to serve an additional term.

Bump died on February 26, 2008.
