Scope and Contents

This collection includes the correspondence, and diaries of John K. Carmichael, Jr., documenting his careers in the Air Force, education, politics and Ball Corporation as well as his involvement in religious and social organizations. Also included are scrapbooks documenting his time as Administrative Assistant to U.S. Congressman Ralph Harvey and Delaware County Clerk from 1958-1966, and his educational career from elementary school through college. P.074 includes photographs of his military career and other photographs of Muncie, Indiana.

Biographical Note

John K. "Jack" Carmichael, Jr. was born July 3, 1930 in Muncie, Indiana. He graduated from Muncie Central High School and then Indiana University in 1958 with an A.B. degree in government. Carmichael enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1950 and was honorably discharged in 1954 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He taught social studies at Farmland High School (Monroe Central High School) from 1958–1961. Carmichael began his career in politics as the Administrative Assistant to Congressman Ralph Harvey, of the Tenth District of Indiana, serving 1958-1966. Carmichael also served as Delaware County Clerk from 1968-1971 and as a political advisor to Ball Corporation.

Socially he maintained membership in many organizations including Sons of the American Revolution, Kiwanis Club, Barons of Magna Charta and others. Carmichael was also active in the religious sector with activities such as the Gateway Center and the Billy Graham Crusade.
