Established in 1929, as a part of Ball State University’s Teachers College and Muncie Schools, Burris School was named after Dr. Benjamin Burris, Dean of the Ball State University’s Teachers College at the time of the construction of the school. Since 1974, it has seen a separate school district and is no longer considering a part of the Muncie Schools. In 1990, Burris, with the addition of the Indiana Academy of Science, Mathematic and Humanities became a part of University Schools, which gives Ball State University’s Board of Trustees the ultimate authority on school policies.
The bulk of the materials in this collection surround the scrapbook of Burris High School basketball coach, Scott Fisher, who was an Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame inductee. In 1929, he established Burris’ basketball program, who would go on to dominate East Central Indiana basketball, including 6 straight sectional titles from 1939-1944, participating in the Final Four in 1938 and won over 85% of games he coached while at Burris.
