Helen B. Schwartz was born in New York in 1919. She graduated Hunter College High School and attended Wellesley College, graduating in 1941. The couple resided in Muncie for a short time, then moved to Virginia while Mr. Schwartz served in the Navy during World War II. After the war, they returned to Muncie where they would remain.

The Schwartzes had four daughters: Judith, Susan, Deborah, and Joan. For many years, Helen Schwartz served as the Vice President of Schwartz Paper Company, a local corporation founded by her husband. She was also a member of the National Federation of Temple Sisterhoods, where she served as the organization's vice president, and a founding member of Hoosier Bounty.
