Historical Note
Shortly after the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861, the Union army found itself in need of recruits to wage a long-term war. Many counties, including Delaware County, offered bounties as an incentive to boost enlistment in the army. Many soldiers from Delaware County traveled to Richmond or Indianapolis to enlist in one of the Hoosier regiments. The Union soldiers from Delaware County fought in numerous battles across the country including Gettysburg, Antietam, and Second Bull Run. Following the war, Delaware County created and maintained records of the county's Civil War veterans using veterans' enrollment forms in 1886 and 1890.
