Solomon Rice Civil War correspondence
Scope and Contents
This collection includes correspondence and other records ranging from 1857 to 1884 relating to the Solomon Rice family of Cass County, Indiana. Most of the letters in this collection were exchanged between Solomon Rice and his wife, Hannah Rice. A smaller portion of the collection includes letters to Mattie Rice from her family and friends. Also includes a photograph of Solomon and Hannah Rice.

Biographical Note
Solomon Rice was born May 10, 1834 in Northampton, Pennsylvania. He married Hannah Ann Pitman on October 6, 1859 and settled with his family in Carroll County, Indiana. The couple had nine children: William, Gerrard, Martha, John, Emma, George, Solomon, Ann, and Elmer. Solomon passed away on April 13, 1914 and is buried with his wife in Clymers cemetery in Cass County, Indiana.
During the American Civil War, Solomon enlisted in the 128th Regiment of Indiana. His service took him to the south near the end of the war, travelling through Tennessee, North Carolina, and Georgia. His wartime experiences are detailed in his letters to Hannah and his children.
