Historical Note

Muncie High School--the predecessor of Muncie Central High School--was located in the 300 block of S. High Street. Construction on the building began 1879 and cost a total of $26,000. The school opened on 1881 and the first graduating class consisted of six students. By the early 1910s, the nearly thirty-year-old building was condemed twice by the State Board of Health, prompting the Muncie-community to build a new school facility. By 1913, the Muncie High School was closed and the student body--consisting of 880 students at the time--attended classes temporarily at a former factory at 316 N. Mulberry Street. The new Muncie Central High School opened in 1915 at N. Walnut Street. This building was replaced in 1973 by the current Muncie Central High School building.
