Historical Note

The Middletown Area Study (MAS) was an annual survey sponsored by Ball State University`s Department of Sociology and the Center for Middletown Studies between 1978 and 2004. Principal investigators for the project included Dr. Stephen D. Johnson, Dr. William Johnson, Dr. David Morris, Dr. John G Condran, Dr Jerry G. Bode, Dr. Joseph Tamney, Harry Nelson, Dr. Ronald Burton, and Dr. Ione Y. DeOllos.

The purpose of these studies was to assess the views and lifestyles of citizens on major topics including questions on life satisfaction, education, income, family, religion, and politics. The focus of the studies varied from year to year and overtime included such topics as abortion, the AIDS epidemic, race relations, the elderly, September 11 terrorist attacks, and attitudes about Arabs.
