The Altrusa Club was founded in 1917 by Dr. Alfred Durham. It was originally started as a national club for business and professional women. The club became Altrusa International in 1934. Altrusa International is a non-profit organization that focuses on community service. As of 2008, the international club has 10,000 members, 383 clubs, and is located in 13 countries. Altrusa International has a consultative role in the United Nations.
District Six contains clubs from Indiana, Illinois, and Kentucky. The district was founded in 1955, however it contains one of the earliest clubs in Altrusa - Indianapolis. District Six has 39 clubs across the three states, and has more than 1000 members. The district has 2 ASTRA clubs, which are focused on leadership development and community service for young people. These two clubs are located in Muncie and Terre Haute. Each club organizes and participates in service projects and fundraising.
As of July 2014, the following Altrusa District Six clubs have disbanded: Anderson, Indiana; Bowling Green, Kentucky; Calumet Area, Indiana; Chicago, Illinois; Danville, Illinois; Elkhart County, Indiana; Fort Wayne, Indiana; Glasgow-Barron County, Indiana; Logansport, Indiana; Northern Kentucky Area; Peoria, Illinois; Peru, Indiana; Portland, Indiana; and Richmond, Indiana.
