Administrative History
The Indiana Collegiate Press Association (ICPA) was created in 1957 at Indiana State University in Terre Haute by John Boyd of Indiana State University, Louis Inglehart of Ball State University, and a group of journalism students who hoped to “promote fellowship and cooperation among the state’s collegiate journalists” and publications. Eleven colleges and universities sent delegates to the first state convention at Bloomington in the spring of 1957. The ICPA emphasizes five goals: stimulating Indiana college student’s interest in journalism, creating a sense of fellowship among college journalists, raising the standards of college journalism, fostering free speech and a free press on Indiana’s college campuses, and assisting Indiana’s colleges and universities in meeting these goals. The ICPA now has 33 member institutions with 42 publications from Indiana’s public and private universities. The main event each year is used to encourage fellowship among member journalists and schools is the annual publication awards convention. This event presents hundreds of awards in all categories of publications: newspapers, yearbooks, news magazines, literary magazines, advertising, and online publications.
