Historical Note

The Country Gentleman was founded in 1831 by Luther Tucker in Rochester, New York. In 1940 the weekly magazine moved to Albany, New York. In 1911 the magazine was purchased by Cyrus H. Curtis, head of the Curtis Publishing in Philadelphia, who wanted the magazine to focus on the business side of farming. By 1955 The Country Gentleman had become the second most popular agricultural magazine, with over 2 million copies in circulation. Its popularity soon attracted the attention of the publishers of Farm Journal, who purchased The Country Gentleman and merged it with Farm Journal.
