Administrative History

Indiana Artisan was created in 2008 by Lieutenant Governor Becky Skillman as an economic effort to increase business to local artisans. Its development was designed to incorporate elements from "arts-as-economic" programs in the states of North Carolina, Kentucky, and West Virginia. The state funded Indiana artisans for three years with a plan to be self-sustaining by 2010. In 2010, the State of Indiana passed a resolution making Indiana Artisan the official organization to promote local artisans. It is now run by a 15 member board of directors and is a non-profit organization named Indiana Artisan, Inc.

Indiana Artisan lists the following goals for the program: 1) Raise awareness about the availability of locally-crafted products 2) Establish a brand for Indiana-made goods 3) Provide artisans, particularly those in rural areas, with access to entrepreneurial 4) Support including training and networking opportunities 5) Support artisan trail and retail development 6) Encourage visitation to Indiana

In 2008, Indiana Artisan offered an Artisan Train grant program. The result is 8 artisan trails across Indiana. Indiana Marketplace was established in 2011. Indiana Marketplace is an annual tradeshow of local artisans.
